The first joint event between Wikimedia Deutschland’s volunteer authors and photographers and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin took place at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen on the last weekend of November.
For some years now, occasional events have been held at cultural institutions, allowing Wikipedia volunteers and cultural organizations to get to know each other and create articles and photographs for use on Wikipedia. The first-ever such ‘GLAM-on-Tour-Event’ (G=Galleries L=Libraries A=Archives M=Museums) has now been held at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen. Under the slogan of ‘Wiki goes MEK!’, around 20 Wikipedia volunteers got to know the museum and its collection and started improving and expanding the German entries on everyday culture on Wikipedia with texts and photographs.
After the Wikipedia volunteers were given a tour of the permanent and special exhibitions and the museum’s visible-storage study rooms, the working part of the event began: With the help of handhelds containing relevant literature on topics and objects selected in advance[A1] , the authors set about writing and revising a variety of Wikipedia entries. Nine new articles have been written already, and additions have been made to over 25 articles. Articles were written on certain key pieces and artists in the museum, including the ‘Venetian gondola’ (Venezianische Gondel), ‘Conchita Wurst on the crescent moon’ (Conchita Wurst auf der Mondsichel) and the painter Wilhelm Kiesewetter (all entries in German). One focus was on the museum’s games collection, and thus numerous new entries were also written on the topic of games.
All of the entries created are listed on the event’s Wikipedia project page (in German): Wiki goes MEK!
