In the area known as the 'Museumhöfen', between the Museum Island and the Humboldt University's Grimm Zentrum, the National Museums' Kompetenzzentrum Archäologie (or Competence Centre for Archaeology) is gradually taking shape. When it opens its doors in 2012, it will house several libraries, study rooms, workshops and the research administration offices, freeing up space on the Museum Island so that it can be dedicated entirely to the presentation of the various collections. The building has been designed by the Stuttgart-based office of harris + kurrle architekten bda.
The building's topping out marks another step towards the completion of the Museum Island Master Plan and was attended by two representatives from the federal government: Ingeborg Berggreen-Merkel, Ministerial Director to the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, and Jan Mücke, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development.
