In autumn 2013, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin advertised their third competition for young artists, WÜNSCH DIR WAS! (MAKE A WISH!). Young people were invited to come up with ideas for the two museums housed in the former barracks of the Royal Bodyguard at the Charlottenburg Palace: the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg and the Museum Berggruen. On 30th January 2014, a jury made up of young people and museum experts considered all the ideas submitted and selected "Graffiti, Farbe und Licht” (Graffiti, colour and light) by David Adam, Lasse Gräf and Lucius Pabst as the winning entry.

 "Graffiti in the Museum”

The project "Graffiti in the Museum” was developed to turn the winning idea into reality; through a series of workshops led by the Berlin artist Stephan Wilke and the artist duo Various & Gould, the three winners explored various techniques of graffiti art and street art, with the help of other young workshop participants.

The result is a pair of exhibitions which are due to go on display in the foyers of the Charlottenburg museums, highlighting a connection between the two institutions.

The exhibition in the Museum Berggruen, entitled "Menschenwald” (Human Forest), sets out to explore the way in which the human being is portrayed in Modern art. For "Traumwelten” (Dream Worlds) in the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg, the young artists took inspiration from Surrealist art. Using the techniques of graffiti and street art as a contemporary form of expression, as well as a way to have fun with experimenting, both exhibitions explore and extend themes which preoccupied artists of the Modernist era, reinterpreting them for the 21st century.

On 7th October 2014 the exhibitions will be officially opened in a ceremony attended by competition winners, David Adam, Lasse Gräf and Lucius Pabst, along with Udo Kittelmann, Director of the National Gallery in Berlin, and everyone else who has been involved. The exhibitions will be on display up to and including 12th October 2014.

WÜNSCH DIR WAS!, the design competition for young people, takes place annually at different sites around the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The next round opens in November 2014 when the call will go out for ideas for the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum for Islamic Art) on the Museumsinsel. Work on putting the winning idea into practice will begin in Spring 2015.
