On 9 September Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark joined President Joachim Gauck in opening the 'Vikings’ exhibition, organized by the Staatliche Museen’s Museum of Prehistory and Early History. The assembled guests from the world of politics, business, culture, and the media were officially welcomed by Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, President Joachim Gauck of Germany, Her Majesty Margrethe II of Denmark, and Matthias Wemhoff, Director of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, in an event held in the Berlin state parliament.
The guests then walked over the road to the Gropius Bau to see the 800 exhibits relating to the diverse culture of the Vikings. The centrepiece of the exhibition is the Roskilde 6; the 37-metre-long warship is the largest Viking vessel ever found. 'The Roskilde 6 is the key to understanding the Vikings’, said Matthias Wemhoff.
