“The Vikings”: 100,000 visitors and counting

12.11.2014

Berliners and tourists alike are flocking to see the Viking exhibition. After just nine weeks, the curators, Bernhard Heeb and Benjamin Wehry, and the director of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin's Museum of Prehistory and Early History, Matthias Wemhoff, assembled to give a surprise welcome to the 100,000th visitor to the exhibition, Andrea Pelz and her family. Andrea (29) and Johann Pelz (32) had come all the way from Leipzig with their two kids, Johann-Alfred and Greta Ruth, just to see the Viking exhibition.

Afterwards, our 100,000th visitor said she was especially interested in the archaeological finds and the shipbuilding workshop featuring live demonstrations with craftsmen from the Viking Ship Museum of Roskilde. Shipbuilder Mike Riebort explained the practice of wood splitting in fresh timber and how the wood is subsequently used.

Per Erik Veng, an envoy from the Royal Danish embassy, was also present with a surprise gift for the lucky visitors: a voucher for a visit to the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde for two adults and three children that can be redeemed any time over the next two years. The visitors to Roskilde will be treated to a guided tour of the Viking Ship Museum, a ride on a real Viking ship, and a dinner showcasing specialties of new Nordic cuisine.
