On Thursday, 13 July 2023, this year’s edition of the “Sound in the Garden” Concert Series begins in the Neue Nationalgalerie sculpture garden. German-Iranian musician MARYAM.fyi kicks off the series. On 10 August 2023, the artist caner teker presents the performance KIRKPINAR on the back terrace. Admission to the concerts and the exhibitions is free as part of Art4All.
In case of bad weather, events take place indoors. The Sundowner Bar on the terrace is open from 6 to 9:30 pm.
The exhibitions The Art of Society,Gerhard Richter: 100 Works for Berlin, Tehching Hsieh, Judit Reigl: Centers of Dominance and Isa Genzken: 75/75 are also open as part of Volkswagen Art4All on Thursdays from 4 to 8 pm with free admission.
MARYAM.fyi’s sound is unique: sometimes big and sweeping; sometimes playful, sassy and direct. It is easy to hear that she grew up surrounded by Indie Pop while also having had experience with opera. The artist with Iranian roots describes her musical style as “sophisticated Indie Pop”. She is currently using her voice and platform to speak out for justice in her father’s homeland. In her column for DIFFUS magazine, the artist writes about events in Iran and also describes what is happening in Germany. She speaks about the privileges associated with having been born and raised in Germany.
MARYAM.fyi co-curated a happening in support of the protesters in Iran at the Neue Nationalgalerie in 2022, at which Iranian artists showed their solidarity with women in Iran and their struggle for freedom through songs, poems, talks and performances. MARYAM.fyi has performed at festivals in Germany and Switzerland and will appear at the LOLLAPALOOZA Festival in Berlin in September 2023.
On 10 August 2023, the artist caner teker shows the performance KIRKPINAR with music by Lou Drago on the back terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie.
The “Sound in the Garden” concert series follows in the tradition of Jazz in the Garden, which took place from the 1970s to the mid-1980s in the Neue Nationalgalerie sculpture garden. From 6 August to 4 September 2022, live concerts were held here for the first time since 1986. Music and acts as varied as Älice, Wandermüd, Imran Ayata & Bülent Kullukcu with Cavidan Ünal and the Deep Gold Band performed between sculptures by Bernhard Heiliger, Henri Laurens and René Sintenis.
The sculpture garden has been open to visitors again since the renovation and reopening of the Neue Nationalgalerie in 2021.
Sound in the Garden is funded by the Volkswagen Group: Partner of the Nationalgalerie.
Sound in the Garden is made possible through the Freunde der Nationalgalerie.
