The Preis der Nationalgalerie, 2021: Sung Tieu Receives Audience Award

Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

After an international jury awarded the 11th Preis der Nationalgalerie to Sandra Mujinga on 7 October 2021, the public has now chosen Sung Tieu as its favourite in an online vote.

Berlin-based German-Vietnamese artist Sung Tieu’s (*1987, Hai Duong, Vietnam) installations, videos, sound works, and interventions encompass themes such as life in the diaspora and its psychological effects, and the legacies of the Cold War and its impact on global capitalism. In her works, she often interweaves fiction and reality, historical and biographical events from her origins, and different realities of life. An example is her ongoing examination of the 1980 recruitment agreement between the German Democratic Republic and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which forms the background to her presentation at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin.

Exhibition visitors were able to cast their votes online. The Audience Award is presented in cooperation with tip Berlin.

The Shortlist Exhibition for the Preis der Nationalgalerie, 2021 closed on 27 February 2022. Sandra Mujinga, who was awarded the jury prize on 7 October 2021, will also be honoured with a large, solo exhibition and accompanying publication at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin at the end of 2022.
