The Neues Museum, Kupferstichkabinett, Kunstbibliothek, Museum für Fotografie and Museum Europäischer Kulturen Reopen in June

In June the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is reopening five more of its venues with special opening hours. On 19 June the Neues Museum (New Museum) on the Museuminsel Berlin, the special exhibitions at the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) and the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) at the Kulturforum reopen. The Museum für Fotografie (Museum of Photography) in Charlottenburg opens its doors to the public again on 25 June, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK, Museum of European Cultures) at the Dahlem museum site as of 27 June 2020. Visitors are obliged to wear a mask/nose and mouth covering, and a visit is still only possible with a time-slot ticket, which can be booked online in advance: www.smb.museum/tickets.

“I’m delighted to be able to announce additional reopenings in June”, said Michael Eissenhauer, director-general of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. “As Europe’s largest association of museums, we would like to offer the pubic an inspiring but also safe experience of art and culture. Each of our seventeen very different museum buildings has an individual health and safety concept in place that is determined by current official regulations and the availability of materials. After more than three months of closures, we are working intensively to be able to reopen all the other Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues for our visitors as soon as possible.

• As of Friday, 19 June 2020, the Neue Museum (New Museum) on the Museumsinsel Berlin is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am – 6 pm. Access until further notice is via the Kolonnadenhof.
• As of Friday, 19 June 2020, the special exhibitions at the Kupferstichkabinett and the Kunstbibliothek, located at the Kulturforum, are open from Tuesday to Friday, 10 am – 6 pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm. The collections’ study and reading rooms remain closed for the time being.
• As of Thursday, 25 June 2020, the Museum für Fotografie is open from Thursday to Sonntag, 11 am – 8 pm.
• As of Saturday, 27 June 2020, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen is open from Saturday to Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm.

Online Time-Slot Tickets

Until further notice, museum visits are only possible with a time-slot ticket. To avoid lines forming at the ticket counters and entrances it is recommended that these tickets be purchased online in advance. Time-slot tickets will be made available successively for the reopened museums starting next week. www.smb.museum/tickets

Children and teens under 18, persons accompanying severely disabled individuals, holders of annual passes, press, ICOM or DMB IDs, as well as members of the Friends or Supporter Associations of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin are requested to reserve a gratis time-slot online or at the ticket counter and to present corresponding ID upon admission without being asked. Time-fenster tickets can also be purchased on site at the ticket counters, subject to availability.

Public Health and Safety Measures

The number of visitors is limited and determined by the space available. All visitors aged 6+ are obliged to wear a mask/nose and mouth covering, to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 metres from other people, to follow the designated courses through all exhibition spaces and to avoid forming groups inside the buildings. Special events and guided tours are not taking place until further notice.

Shops & Cafés

The shops at the museums and venues are accessible during opening hours from 12 am to 6 pm. The cafés in the Neues Museum, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) and the outdoor terrace of the Kulturforum are accessible during the opening hours listed above. Visitors are requested to use cashless payment methods.

Current Special and Permanent Exhibitions

The Neues Museum brings together interrelated exhibits from the Ägyptische Museum und Papyrussammlung (Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection), the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte (Museum of Prehistory and Early History), and the Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities). Currently on view are the special exhibitions Photographic Memories. Nubia around 1900 (until 30 August 2020) and Berlin’s Largest Excavation: Research Area Biesdorf (extended until 4 January 2021).

The Kupferstichkabinett is showing the special exhibition Raphael in Berlin: Masterpieces from the Kupferstichkabinett (extended until 23 August 2020) in its special exhibition space at the Kulturforum.

The Kunstbibliothek is presenting the special exhibition Trade:Mark – The Stankowski + Duschek Graphic Design Studio (extended until 16 August 2020) in the special exhibition space at the Kulturforum, and the reading room lobby. Would you like a bag with that (logo)?: Plastic Bags from the 1960s to the 1980s (until 28 June 2020), as well as The 100 Best Posters from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, 2019 (16 June – 5  July 2020).

At the Museum für Fotografie the Kunstbibliothek is showing the special exhibition FOTOGRAFIE: Wolfgang Schulz and the Photo Scene around 1980 (25 June – 11 October 2020), and the Helmut Newton Foundation is presenting the special exhibition Body Performance (extended until 20  September 2020) in addtion to the permanent exhibition.

On display at the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) are the special exhibitions Fast Fashion: The Dark Sides of Fashion (extended until 31 January 2021) and comiXconnection (extended until 31 May 2021), as well as the collection presentation.

Previously Reopened Museums

Reopened on the Museumsinsel Berlin as of 12 May are the Altes Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, and Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am – 6 pm. At the Kulturforum the Gemäldegalerie (Old Master Paintings) and the special exhibition Pop on Paper. From Warhol to Lichtenstein can be visited from Tuesday to Freitag, 10 am – 6 pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm. As of 14 June 2020 the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin has been reopened to the public from Tuesday to Freitag, 10 – 6 pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday, 11 am – 6 pm.

The reopenings of other Staatliche Museen zu Berlin venues are currently in preparation and will soon be announced.
