Houston is the current stop on the Museum Berggruen’s international tour. From 20 May to 13 September 2026, a selection of works from the collection is being presented in the United States for the first time.

Under the title Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen, the exhibition brings together nearly 100 paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Cézanne, and Georges Braque. Selected works from the Museum Berggruen are placed in dialogue with key works by the same artists from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. These encounters open up new perspectives on major positions in modern art while also drawing attention to the role of collecting itself.

At the heart of the exhibition are the distinctive artistic preferences of collector and art dealer Heinz Berggruen (1914–2007), as well as his close connections with artists, writers, and the art market in postwar Paris. Extensive groups of works by Picasso and Klee trace the development of their respective practices, complemented by Matisse’s distinctive cut-outs, Giacometti’s sculptures, and paintings and drawings by Cézanne and Braque. Thematic focuses on still life, portraiture, the human figure, and landscape also reveal the many connections within the collection.

The exhibition is curated by Ann Dumas and Dena Woodall (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) and Natalie Zimmer (Museum Berggruen).
