Kunstgewerbemuseum
After a three-year programme of renovation, the Kulturforum’s home for art, fashion and design marked its reopening on 21 November 2014 with a big celebration. The oldest museum of its kind in Germany, famous for its mediaeval and Renaissance treasures, the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) now has a new focus on the 20th century.
More than 1000 invited guests gathered in the evening for the opening event. It started with a look back at the history of the collection and the Kulturforum, presented by Günther Schauerte, Vice-President of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz and Michael Eissenhauer, General Director of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Sabine Thümmler, Director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum, then gave an introduction to the museum and offered a preview of future projects. Stephan Schwarz, Chairman of the Julius-Lessing-Gesellschaft - the Friends of the Kunstgewerbemuseum - explained the association’s important role in supporting the museum. There then followed a special lecture on the role of fashion through the ages, given by journalist Ingeborg Harms. When the speeches were over, guests were invited to explore the museum for themselves.
