The Gold Projections: gilding process, projection, transformation from 7 to 19 February 2017

As a prologue to the major exhibition Alchemy. The Great Art (6 April – 23 July 2017), the American artist Joe Ramirez presents the world premiere of his project The Gold Projections, on the occasion of the 67th Berlin Film Festival, from 7 – 19 February 2017.

Stage I

The first stage involves a performance piece punctuated by a film showing every 20 minutes. The darkened exhibition hall is set up with a large (2.5 m) disk laid horizontally, personally gilded by the artist and with the help of his assistants, while one small (1.2 m) gilded disk hangs vertically. The latter disk will show scenes from Somnium and The Gold Projections cycle at 20 minutes intervals.

Stage II

At the end of the gilding process, the large, completed gold disk will be hung facing the small disk on an axis. Somnium will show continuously for two days during opening hours, and on the 16 February 2017 with extended opening hours until 2 am in the morning; the small disk will show Patti Smith as the Silent Narrator. Joe Ramirez will be present, overseeing the work every day.

Stage III

On 17 February 2017, the exhibition hall will be closed for preparation of a transformation process of Somnium into a new piece called Limits of the Marvellous, This new film will be shown on 18 and 19 February 2017 and will also be included in the exhibition Alchemy. The Great Art (6 April – 23 July 2017).
