The Gods Have Arrived. A Look behind the Scenes

18.01.2011
Pergamonmuseum

For a good ten weeks people have been working flat out in the Pergamonmuseum's north wing which will soon house 'The Tell Halaf Adventure'. A team of painters, carpenters and exhibition designers are busy working night and day, painting, smoothing down surfaces, drilling and screwing things in place. Experts for art transportation and restorers are working hand in hand to manoeuvre the heavy sculptures and reliefs, some weighing up to four tons, into their new display areas.

In a few days the curtain will rise to reveal more than 500 objects, spread over 1400 m² of exhibition space. Each artefact will, in its own way, tell of the exciting history of the palace of Tell Halaf in north-east Syria, its discovery and excavation by Max von Oppenheim and the subsequent display of the monumental gods, animals and mythological creatures taken from there in the former Berlin Tell-Halaf Museum, as well as their tragic devastation in the Second World War.

It took nine years of painstaking work to reassemble the 40 sculptures from Tell Halaf which were previously thought forever lost. They can now finally go on show to the public once again.
