On 17th June 2014 ICOM Deutschland (German National Committee of the International Council of Museums), the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK) and the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) presented the German language version of the ICOM Emergency Red List of Syrian Cultural Objects at Risk at the Archäologisches Zentrum of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
The Emergency Red List of Syrian Cultural Objects at Risk was created following the reports of widespread damage and looting of cultural heritage in Syria in the midst of the current armed conflict that has shaken the country. ICOM considers the fight against illicit traffic in cultural goods to be a central element of its public service missions, placing it at the core of its programmes' actions. ICOM Red Lists are practical tools that support the work of law enforcement and of all those concerned with the protection and preservation of cultural heritage (http://icom.museum/programmes/fighting-illicit-traffic/).
The Red Lists assist in identifying the types and categories of cultural objects that are particularly vulnerable to smuggling and illicit trafficking. The Emergency Red List of Syrian Cultural Objects at Risk was developed with the valuable assistance of a team of national and international experts, and the generous support of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The event took place at the Archäologisches Zentrum of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Choosing this location, the SPK intends to highlight its various activities against illicit traffic in cultural goods and towards their lasting protection.
