Museum Berggruen
Paris will be the next European stop on the international tour of Museum Berggruen – Neue Nationalgalerie. From 2 October 2024 to 27 January 2025, a selection of the Museum Berggruen collection will be showcased at the Musée de l'Orangerie.
Titled “Heinz Berggruen – An Art Dealer and His Collection”, the exhibition highlights Heinz Berggruen’s close connections to the artists of his time. Featuring over 80 masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and Paul Cézanne, the exhibition offers fresh perspectives on the Museum Berggruen’s collection by organizing the pieces around thematic concepts rather than strictly by artist. It also provides deeper insight into Berggruen’s role as a collector and his extensive network as an art dealer.
With Paris as a stop on the tour, the collection returns to its symbolic birthplace and one of the most professionally significant locations in Berggruen’s life. The artists he collected not only lived in Paris but also had a profound impact on the city’s art scene. For nearly 30 years, Berggruen himself ran his renowned gallery, Berggruen & Cie., on Rue de l'Université, establishing it as a leading address for modern art.
Since the renovation of the Stülerbau West began in autumn 2022, the collection has been traveling internationally. After highly successful exhibitions in Japan, China, and Venice, this marks the first time the collection will be displayed in such scope in Paris.
The exhibition is curated by Claire Bernardi and Guillaume Fabius (Musée de l'Orangerie), alongside Gabriel Montua and Veronika Rudorfer (Museum Berggruen).
