The next European stop on Museum Berggruen’s international tour is at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. From 28 October 2025 to 1 February 2026, a selection of works from the Museum Berggruen collection is showcased in Madrid.

The exhibition Picasso and Klee in the Heinz Berggruen Collection explores the artistic relationship between two of modern art’s most influential figures: Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee. Featuring around fifty works from Museum Berggruen’s collection, the exhibition presents a visual and intellectual dialogue between the two artists most cherished by collector Heinz Berggruen — described in his memoirs as “the two fundamental creators” of the first half of the twentieth century.

Picasso and Klee shared a commitment to experimentation, an affinity for satire, and a bold inventiveness with line and form. As contemporaries they were actively engaged with each other’s work and at times inspired by one another.

Looking closely at how Klee and Picasso reimagine traditional genres and break established conventions, the exhibition is structured around four thematic sections reflecting areas of mutual exploration: Portraits and Masks, Places, Objects, and Harlequins and Nudes. Presented in dialogue with Old Masters, and works by the two artists from the collection of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza – including several once owned by Berggruen himself – the exhibition not only traces artistic affinities between Picasso and Klee, but also reveals the personal and professional connections between Heinz Berggruen and Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza.

The exhibition is curated by Paloma Alarcó and Marta Ruiz del Árbol (Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza) alongside Gabriel Montua and Natalie Zimmer (Museum Berggruen).
