The exhibition The Allure of Rome: Maarten van Heemskerck Draws the City, which was originally presented by the Kupferstichkabinett from April to August 2024, has been nominated for the Exhibition of the Year prize, which has been awarded by ART – Das Kunstmagazin since 2015 to honour the fine art of exhibition-making.

Every year, ART magazine’s editorial team nominates the curators of 12 exceptional exhibitions from the previous year of art in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, with the winner or winning team selected by a jury of distinguished experts in the field.

ART explains why The Allure of Rome was nominated:

Here, elements that would in many cases otherwise be considered incidental have been turned into the main attraction: the Roman sketchbook by the Haarlem master, exquisitely presented page for page, is the centrepiece and forms the basis upon which the rest of the exhibition is built.

The Allure of Rome was curated by Christien Melzer (Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), Tatjana Bartsch (Bibliotheca Hertziana, Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte, Rome) and Hans-Ulrich Kessler (Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin).

The ART curatorial prize will be awarded on 10 April 2025 in Cologne with the generous support of the Van Ham art auction house.
