Neues Museum

The Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is now a project partner of Transforming the Egyptian Museum Cairo, a 3.1 million euro project supported by the European Union. The objective of the three-year undertaking, which will involve numerous European partner organisations, is for the five biggest European collections of Egyptian antiquities to assist in the generation of a master plan for the future of the world-famous and heritage-listed Egyptian National Museum on Tahir Square, and to improve the appearance of sections of the exhibition.

Under the direction of the Museo Egizio (Turin), the Berlin collection is accompanied by project partners from the Louvre (Paris), the British Museum (London), and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (Leiden). Under the leadership of the Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, a number of departments of the General Directorate of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) will be lending their expertise. The consultations consist in part in the production of a comprehensive museum strategy, ideas for the reconception of the display collection and the partial implementation of new content – such as the finds from the Royal Tombs of Tanis – the development of fields such as education, communications or building management, as well as the preparation of a master plan for the museum. Additionally, the consortium will provide advice on a possible application for recognition as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
