In October 2020 the Photography Commission of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Volkskunde (dgv) dedicated a symposium to “SnAppShots. Smartphones als Kamera” (Snapshots Taken with Apps and Smartphone Cameras), examining photographic practices using a smartphone. It was conceived and organised by Judith Schühle / Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK, Museum of European Cultures) – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Ulrich Hägele / Institut für Medienwissenschaft, Universität Tübingen, and Ludger Derenthal / Kunstbibliothek (Art Library), Sammlung Fotografie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

The eponymous symposium publication has just been released by the Waxmann Verlag as the 14th volume in the series Visuelle Kultur. Studien und Materialien (Visual Culture: Studies and Materials). It includes nearly all the contributions to the symposium, combining articles by experts in the fields of history, art history, ethnology, empirical cultural studies, European ethnology, education, pedagogy and media studies – creating a kaleidoscope focusing on the visual world of the smartphone.

The smartphone signifies a massive change in the realm of images. It is a revolution, which has fundamentally transformed not only our daily lives, leisure time, and visual practices, but also many professions – and will continue to do so. It is no longer just the taking of photographs that has impacted the lifestyles of many people since the smartphone’s introduction, but increasingly sharing photographs and communicating with them on social networks. The symposium publication examines this paradigm change from various perspectives.
