Sundowner Bar on the Terrace at the Neue Nationalgalerie: Every Friday and Saturday Evening from 6 pm to 10 pm, Starting Friday, 24 June 2022

At sunset, every Friday and Saturday from 24 June to 27 August 2022, from 6 pm to 10 pm, the “MIES-liwska” bar, designed by artist Karsten Konrad, opens to all visitors on the terrace of the Neue Nationalgalerie, offering drinks and music. The sculptural bar, created especially for the terrace of the museum, is based on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s architectural designs. With its black-and-white colour concept, and references to the iconic roof construction, it alludes directly to the architecture of the Neue Nationalgalerie. The name of the bar, MIES-liwska, is based on the Mysliwska bar run by Karsten Konrad and Hannes Gruber that has existed for over 30 years in Kreuzberg with close ties to Berlin’s art academies.

Barbara Kruger Bitte lachen / please cry open on sundowner evenings until 10 pm

The exhibition by Barbara Kruger, Bitte lachen / Please cry (until 27 August 2022), is open from 6 pm to 10 pm during the special Sundowner evenings. Here, visitors are given the opportunity to visit the floor work specially designed for the Mies space in the late evening hours. The lighting conditions of the setting sun create a completely new visual experience for the site-specific work that cannot be experienced during usual opening hours.

The artist Karsten Konrad

Karsten Konrad (b. 1962 in Würzburg) studied at the end of the 1980s at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and at the Royal College of Art in London with sculptor David Evison and performance artist Marina Abramović. His recurring themes include identity and memory, material and history, structuralism and linguistics, as well as urbanity and urbanism. In all his works, he exclusively uses found objects and focuses on sustainability and recycling in his everyday artistic practice. Konrad has presented and exhibited his works worldwide – among other venues at the Kunstmuseum Esbjerg, Denmark, the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Tennispalatsi Art Museum, Helsinki and the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin. He has been professor of sculpture at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2016.
