On Wednesday, 17 June 2026, the ARTE Summer Cinema once again launches its open-air viewing season at the Kulturforum. Cinematic highlights from the past months and audience favourites will be shown on a massive screen in the piazza in front of the Gemäldegalerie (Old Masters Gallery) until 28 August 2026.

As in past years, the Yorck Kinogruppe, which organises the Summer Cinema event in collaboration with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the German-French cultural television channel ARTE, has put together a varied and entertaining programme. All films are shown in their original language with either German or English subtitles.

Programme Highlights

On 17 June, “À voix b‘asse” (Mit leiser Stimme) starts the season at 9:45 pm. Fresh from this year’s Berlinale film competition, it tells a moving story about family and queer identity, as a young woman returns to her native home in Tunisia following the death of a family member.

Additional selected highlights during this season’s first half:

  • Thursday, 18 June: “Amrum” – Fatih Akin’s audience favourite based on Hark Bohm’s childhood memories after the Second World War.
  • Friday, 3 July: “Sentimental Value” – Oscar-winning family drama with Renate Reinsvee, Elle Fanning and Stellan Skasgård.
  • Thursday, 9 July: “The History of Sound” – a sensitively crafted queer drama with Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor about the intertwining of two destinies through the power of music during Pride Month.
  • Wednesday, 15 July: “Surf Film Nacht: Kingdom of the Evening” – The award-winning travel documentary navigates between the past and the present, telling of the never-ending search for individual freedom.
  • Sunday, 19 July: “La Piscine (Der Swimmingpool)” – A film classic with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider in which erotic tension, jealousy and envy lead to a deadly conflict.

Summer Cinema

In the summers of 2002 and 2003, the most popular cinema films of the previous months were rescreened as part of the Museum Film Festival. In the following years, the open-air cinema relocated to Berlin’s Museumsinsel (Museum Island). In 2007, it returned to the Kulturforum under the Yorck Group’s direction. Since then, cinematic highlights of the past months, original versions, sneak previews, and film series accompanying ongoing museum exhibitions have been shown there each year, sometimes with the actors in attendance.
