Sol Calero is the pubic`s favourite in the shortlist exhibition of the Preis der Nationalgalerie 2017

Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart

After the jury awarded the 9th Preis der Nationalgalerie to Agnieszka Polska in October 2017, now the public has chosen its favourite. Winner of the vote is Sol Calero. The announcement was made on Sunday at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin.

Sol Calero (born 1982 in Caracas, lives and works in Berlin) conflates painting and sculpture to create hybrid installation spaces that operate as social environments and zones of contact. Her playful approach is nuanced with art historical and cultural knowledge by expertly drawing references ranging from Henri Matisse to the Latin American avant-garde and Caribbean tropical modernism. Gradually, cultural stereotypes seep through her excessive imagery of the “tropical,” with which she works through, rather than against, the cultural vocabulary of the cliché.

Exhibition visitors were able to vote in the exhibition and online. The exhibition was seen by 53,500 visitors in total. The Audience Award is presented in cooperation with art – Das Kunstmagazin.

The shortlist exhibition of the Preis der Nationalgalerie also celebrated its finissage on Sunday. Sandra Wollner’s Das unmögliche Bild, the winner of the Förderpreis für Filmkunst, was shown for the last time yesterday.

Agnieszka Polska, winner of the Jury Prize, receives with the award a major solo show in autumn 2018 at Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin accompanied by a publication.
