Gemäldegalerie
The first social media evening of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin was held on September 24th 2016. In view of the special exhibition "El Siglo de Oro. The Age of Velázquez, the Gemäldegalerie exclusively opened its doors. The instant images taken during the event will be on display at Impossible Project Laboratory: How does old art and new media match? An analogue Documentation.
The instant images on display reflect this question in an extraordinary context. They originated during the social media soirée "Old Art in New Media", an Event by Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and were mounted by the artists themselves right after. These pictures narrate parallels and differences between said old masters and social media.
Taken digitally with smartphones, the art was exposed onto instant film through the Instant Lab and thereby regained a haptic dimension. Through this process, some artists' choices were inspired by the event itself and its envigorating discussions, while others laid their focus on something completely different. Next to photos by social media impresarios with grand reach you encounter pictures by participants with a rather small following, in the true sense of the social networks: on eye-level.
The exhibition can be visited until October 3rd: Potsdamer Straße 87 (3rd floor), 10785 Berlin. Free entry. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 14:30 - 18:30 and Saturday 14:00 - 18:30.
