Renovation of the Colonnades on Museumsinsel Completed

29.08.2024
Museumsinsel Berlin

Nearly as old as the Museumsinsel (Museum Island) is the colonnaded passageway enclosing the courtyard between the Neues Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie. The heritage-listed colonnades on Berlin’s Museumsinsel have now been restored to their original state under the direction of the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR).

On Thursday, 29 August 2024, the last construction phase on the northern section of the colonnades along the riverbank of the Spree was completed, and the site returned to the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (SPK) and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The official opening of the colonnades for the public takes place on 1 September 2024. Until then, the Kolonnaden Bar 2024 is open daily, inviting visitors to enjoy music, drinks, a cultural programme, and spend time under the colonnades.

Soon 150 Years Old: The Colonnades on the Museumsinsel Berlin

Based on plans by Friedrich August Stüler and other architects, the colonnades on Museumsinsel were built in several stages beginning in the mid-19th century. The popular and well-known colonnades on the northern end of Museumsinsel and along the River Spree, constructed from 1876‒78, have been a favourite site for Berliners ever since.

The complete restoration and reconstruction of the colonnades have increased their recreational appeal as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site on Berlin’s Museumsinsel. The site has once again become a place for strolling and enjoying culture, and the location offers a serene oasis in the heart of the capital.
