Reading and Study Rooms of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Reopen

As of early June, the reading and study rooms in the Kunstbibliothek, the Kupferstichkabinett and the Zentralarchiv are once again open to the public, though visits must be pre-arranged via email. Currently, visitors do not need to provide a negative test result, however, wearing an FFP2 mask is obligatory.

Reading Room in the Kunstbibliothek

The reading room in the Kunstbibliothek will be accessible from 9 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday. A negative test result is not required, however visitors must register their attendance in advance (and receive email confirmation). To register, please send an email to: auskunft.kb@smb.spk-berlin.de

Study Room in the Kunstbibliothek

The study room of the Kunstbibliothek will be accessible from 2 to 8 pm on Mondays and from 9 am to 4 pm, Tuesday to Friday. Reading Room of the Archaeological Library and the Zentralarchiv

The reading room of the Archäologische Bibliothek and the Zentralarchiv of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in the Archäologisches Zentrum will be accessible from 9 am to 8 pm, Monday to Friday. A negative test result is not required, however visitors must register their attendance in advance (and receive email confirmation).

Please note that in the third time slot from 5 pm to 8 pm, only the materials on the publicly accessible shelves can be consulted. The retrieval of literature from the stacks or the issuing of library passes is restricted to the library’s service hours, 9 am to 4:30 pm.

Information about using the Zentralarchiv of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

A maximum of 10 archive items can be requested per person, per day. With the correct call numbers, you can book a visit and request the relevant archive items up until 2 pm on the (business) day before your visit. If your visit requires research to be carried out, please get in touch well ahead of time.

Study Room of the Kupferstichkabinett

The study room of the Kupferstichkabinett is accessible from 9 am to 6 pm, Tuesday to Friday. A negative test result is not required, however visitors must register their attendance in advance (and receive email confirmation). To register, please send an email to: kk[at]smb.spk-berlin.de. Please nominate one of the following two time slots in your email:

  • Time slot 1: 9 am – 12 pm
  • Time slot 2: 1 pm – 4 pm

You will receive confirmation of your booking via email. This confirmation is required for entry.

Please specify in your email which artworks we should have ready for you to inspect. Please be aware that the number of works to which we can provide access in a single time slot is limited.

Hygiene and Safety Measures

  • When visiting the reading room in the Archäologisches Zentrum, where the Zentralarchiv is located, you must respect the regulations on social distancing and hygiene, and not be presenting any of the typical symptoms of COVID-19.
  • Please do not come to the museum if you are showing symptoms of an acute respiratory illness.
  • For your own safety and that of our staff, both in the public areas of the building (foyer, stairwell, lift, cloak room, bathrooms) and in the reading room, you must wear a FFP2 face mask at all times.
  • Please wash your hands upon entering the building and once you have dropped off your belongings at the cloak room.
  • For the safety of all concerned, you must enter the reading room one at a time.
  • Maintain a distance of at least 1.5 m to other people at all times.
