On Tuesday 22 February 2011, the 'Art Project', responsible for helping to make virtual tours of museums possible, was unveiled in the Alte Nationalgalerie.

The 'Art Project' - a collaboration between the National Museums in Berlin and 15 other world-famous museums together with Google - has been online since 1 February. The Gemäldegalerie and the Alte Nationalgalerie are now the only German museums that can be explored in a completely new way on the Internet.

The National Museums in Berlin have been hard at work with Google over the last 18 months in creating the Art Project. The results of this collaboration are extraordinarily high-resolution images of Hans Holbein the Younger's The Merchant Georg Gisze (1532) and Edouard Manet's In the Conservatory (1879), as well as virtual 360° tours through both galleries. This means that users from around the globe can find out more about the history and artists behind key works featured in the two museums.

In a statement, Michael Eissenhauer, Director General of the National Museums in Berlin said: 'We are currently working hard on the digitization of our holdings. Working with Google now allows us to open up treasures held in the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Gemäldegalerie to a global audience for them to experience in a completely new form.'
