Premiere of ARTE/rbb coproduction “Botticelli” during Lange Nacht der Museen on 29 August 2015 at the Kulturforum

The new film 'Botticelli', a coproduction between ARTE/rbb, on the life and work of the Renaissance artist is about to be screened to coincide with the forthcoming exhibition 'The Botticelli Renaissance' at the Gemäldegalerie (24.09.2015-24.01.2016). The documentary will premiere during the Lange Nacht der Museen at 9 p.m. this Saturday, 29 August 2015, at the outdoor cinema at Kulturforum. A post-screening discussion will be held with director Grit Lederer and Prof. Bernd Lindemann, director of the Gemäldegalerie, moderated by Maria Ossowski (rbb). The film will be broadcast on Sunday, 27 September 2015, at 17:35 on ARTE and on Thursday, 14. January 2016, at 22:45 Uhr on rbb Television.

The Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) is as much a cultural icon as an artistic source of inspiration. Artists around the world cite his work in their art. With his female figures, the iconic Venus and Primavera, he painted his way into our collective visual memory.

Berlin director and art historian Grit Lederer traces the life and work of the artist, takes an in-depth look at the Gemäldegalerie's impressive Botticelli collection, and asks how the iconic works of Sandro Botticelli continue to inspire  art and advertising today. Art experts share insights into what makes his style so unique and explain why the artist fell into obscurity for centuries after his death.  Contemporary artists such as the French artist Orlan and the American Michael Joaquin Grey present works inspired by Botticelli's art. The combined result is a film that traces the phenomenon of Botticelli, from Florence through Paris and New York all the way to Berlin.
