On 16 December 2019 the Bauhausbücher (Bauhaus Books) are on view in an impromptu “pop-up” exhibition at the Kunstbibliothek. The one-day event is followed by a lecture at the nearby Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin on the topicality of these seminal publications for contemporary design practice.

The Bauhausbücher

From 1925 to 1930 Walter Gropius and László Moholy-Nagy edited and produced 14 volumes in a series that became famous as the Bauhausbücher. What significance do these books still hold for contemporary graphic design? Designer Johannes Rinkenburger (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) explores this question in his lecture in the series Visuelle Systeme – interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf Schrift und Typografie (Visual Systems – Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Text and Typography), a joint event of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin and the Kunstbibliothek, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Pop-Up Exhibition: Bauhausbücher, 14+1

A book as object and its materiality were quite often the focus of media theoretical discourse during the Bauhaus era. Building on this perspective, a pop-up exhibition at the Kunstbibliothek offers an encounter with original editions of the Bauhausbücher prior to the start of the lecture – in discussion with collection curator Michael Lailach and in direct dialogue with works from the lecturer’s graphic oeuvre.

The seminar room can only accommodate 20 people at one time, so if attendance is large, visitors should expect a short wait before being able to view the Bauhausbücher. The exhibition Hansjörg Mayer – Typoems and Artist Books is shown in parallel in an adjacent exhibition space.

Lecture by Johannes Rinkenburger

In a lecture at the Staatsbibliothek that follows, Johannes Rinkenburger traces how the Bauhausbücher provide insights into the thought-processes, approaches and visions of the artistic avant-garde around the Bauhaus sphere of ideas. The books represent a primary source of ideas for what we now call graphic design. In his publication that he discusses in the lecture, Visions of the Bauhaus Books – Exploring Connections to Contemporary Graphic Design Practice, Rinkenburger focuses on the content, backgrounds and contexts of the books, which he considers in relation to current design tendencies.
