Pergamonmuseum Reopens with New Exhibition Guide for Children

Following the second closing brought about by the pandemic, the Pergamonmuseum reopened on 16 March 2021 with a special offer for young visitors: A free exhibition guide, developed in collaboration with Berlin school groups, takes 6 to 10-year-olds on Eine Reise durchs Museum für Islamische Kunst (A Journey through the Museum for Islamic Art).

For the German-language project Eine Reise durchs Museum für Islamische Kunst, school groups from the Grundschule am Teltowkanal developed their own personal stories about eight objects and works of art at the Museum für Islamische Kunst. “We are very pleased that we are able to offer an exhibition guide for the ‘little big ones’ – by children for children”, museum director Stefan Weber said.

Starting Points for Their Own Associations and Stories

Accompanied by an art educator and an illustrator, the schoolchildren discovered active and playful ways to access works in the collection and creatively worked out their ideas and stories about them. An exhibition guide by children for children resulted that encourages them to record their own associations and stories, ranging from the monumental Mshatta Façade to intricately made animal figures from the 10th–12th centuries.

The Exhibition Guide Eine Reise durchs Museum für Islamische Kunst

The 30-page German exhibition guide Eine Reise durchs Museum für Islamische Kunst is intended for children aged 6-10 and is now available free of charge at the Pergamonmuseum’s ticket counters in the James-Simon-Galerie and via download (PDF, 2.8 MB).

Education and Outreach at the Museum für Islamische Kunst

Since the start of 2019, the Museum für Islamische Kunst, together with the Education and Outreach Department at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, has been building on its cooperation with schools in Berlin. Regularly held project weeks encourage students’ active participation in cultural life and strengthen collaboration between schools and museums.
