Today Hermann Parzinger, president of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, and the directors of the foundation's five branches announced details of the commemorativenyear 2014: "1914. Awakening. World Breakup". Numerous exhibitions and events planned throughout 2014 will mark the 100-year anniversary of the First World War, a war that is considered the "original catastrophe" of the 20th century. The series also focuses on the years of artistic and technological upheaval leading up to 1914. Various topics are addressed within this context, including the possibilities for digital information and dissemination of knowledge of the First World War, the beginnings of Prussia as an industrial nation, the European perception of the Paraguayan War in Latin America, and artistic currents before and during the war.
In order to better illustrate the upcoming programmes in the museums and institutions, each branch director brought a programme-related object to their respective events. Michael Eissenhauer, director-general of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, presented Marinetti's Futurist Manifesto, while Barbara Schneider-Kempf, director of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, presented a satirical map of Europe from 1914. Barbara Göbel, director of the Ibero-Amerikanische Institut, brought a caricature by the artist Moraima, while Thomas Ertelt, director of the Intitut für Musikforschung, presented a citation from the founding of the Bückeburg Royal Institute of Musicology from 1917, and Jürgen Kloosterhuis, director of the Geheimes Staatsarchiv, brought a dossier on war bonds from the First World War, in which Prussian bureaucrats complained that they were not permitted to subscribe to war bonds.
