On October 2, the Staatliche Museen’s Gipsformerei will release a new edition of its Nefertiti replica. This replica is the only model available for purchase that has been manufactured by a museum, and was developed in a 2-year working process. The museum replica came out of a collaboration with the Rathgen-Forschungslabor, and was carried out in close consultation with the Staatliche Museen’s Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection. The new museum replica is available for purchase at €8,900 and can be ordered from the Gipsformerei. There is a choice of plinths made from light Persian shell limestone or black granite.
The bust of Nefertiti is one of Ancient Egypt’s most famous artistic treasures, and is considered a masterwork of the Amarna Period, and of sculpture more generally. The original, fabricated between 1353–1336 BC is today on exhibit in the Neues Museum on the Museumsinsel Berlin, and is seen there by over 600,000 visitors annually.
