The sculpture ensemble on the New National Gallery's terrace, which has remained virtually unaltered for years, has now been enriched by the addition of one important work. A large bronze 'half-figure' by the Swiss sculptor, Hans Josephsohnm, has found a new home between Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and Eduardo Chillida. The installation of the piece marked the artist's 90th birthday on 20 May 2010.
The sculpture by Hans Josephsohn, created in 1990, belongs to a group of half-figures and recumbent figures for which the Swiss artist received broad international recognition in the 1990s. In its proportions and bulging form, the 'half figure' shares some visual affinity to the human body, but is at the same time liberated from it and can be understood as a free transliteration of the body. As an open bronze cast, marked by chance synergies in colour, the work is an ideal addition to the New National Gallery's sculpture plan.
