The Berlin Senate Department of Culture is acquiring works of contemporary visual art by 21 Berlin artists and groups. Twenty-six of these and a gift of five additional works on permanent loan expand the collection of the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
Enhancing and Enriching the Kuperstichkabinett Collection
With the new acquisitions in 2021, the Kuperstichkabinett is building on existing focuses in the collection while also setting new accents. Outstanding conceptual works involving text as well as drawings and prints that expand the scope of established fine art techniques enrich the museum’s inventory. The acquisitions augment the collection’s existing holdings by artists Nadine Fecht and Thomas Kilppner, while also adding artists whose works are new to the collection: Nina Canell, Paula Doepfner, Lara Faroqhi, Sofia Hultén and Nasan Tur.
Politically and socially critical themes dominate this year’s acquisitions:
Nina Canell transposes the forms of her usually three-dimensional sculptures into two-dimensional silkscreen prints with symbolic, seemingly ornamental forms.
Paula Doepfner poetically captures existential circumstances – physical and psychological torture – in diminutively sized lines of text.
Lara Faroqhi combines drawing and printmaking in an expressive work on paper influenced by Ludwig van Beethoven’s late quartets.
Nadine Fecht scrutinises and rejects outdated gender roles in monumental works involving text.
In her work Foottagen, Sofia Hultén captures the moment of stasis that occurred during the first lockdown in 2020. She does not draw as expected with a pencil, but by sliding across sheets of paper in graphite-coated shoes to produce a work marked with the floor’s grid structure.
Thomas Kilpper’s large-format linocuts – cut out of the former East German Ministry of State Security’s cafeteria floor – revolve around German politics in the time period extending from the National Socialist era to the early 21st century.
Nasan Tur reflects on the capitalism’s excesses in ink drawings and a two-part ensemble consisting of a woodcut and a printing block. The drawings and prints share distinctive lettering. Funding
The Board of Trustees of the Stiftung Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin (German Lottery Foundation) approved a grant of 250,000 euros at its last meeting. The purchases made with these funds at the suggestion of the Förderkommission Bildende Kunst (Commission for the Promotion of Visual Arts) represent an opportunity for Berlin’s museums and collections to acquire works by younger, innovative artists early on in their careers and to also supplement existing holdings with works by renowned artists. The aim is to obtain a representational cross-section of Berlin’s current creative output at a high artistic level. The Berlinische Galerie Foundation, the Stiftung Stadtmuseum, Kupferstichkabinett – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Neue Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) with its Video Forum are represented in the Förderkommission Bildende Kunst.
