Neue Nationalgalerie: Key Handover as Virtual Ceremony on 29 April

The time has finally come: An extensive renovation of the Neue Nationalgalerie has been completed. With Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media Monika Grütters in attendance, the rehabilitated architectural icon was officially handed over to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The building by Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe has been painstakingly restored and modernised according to plans by David Chipperfield.

Major Renovation Completed

Completing construction work on the upper exhibition hall alone required the installation of 1,600 square metres of new glass. the application of 15,000 square metres of fresh coatings, and the renewal of 500 of the steel structure’s welds. After being refurbished and restored in accordance with the building’s status as a historic monument, 800 ceiling lights were fitted with LEDs and reinstalled, along with 196 sections of the ceiling grid and 2,500 square metres of Striegau granite panels. On the terrace and in the sculpture garden, newly planted honey locust trees and silver maples return the garden to its original appearance.

Reopening in August

Following completion of its extensive rehabilitation begun in 2014, the Neue Nationalgalerie is scheduled to open with the exhibitions Alexander Calder. Minimal / Maximal, Rosa Barba. In a Perpetual Now and The Art of Society, 1900 – 1945: The Collection.
