The Museum Europäischer Kulturen is now offering visitors a special new way of exploring its holdings: The museum app 'Blinkster' provides viewers with additional information about select objects from the permanent exhibition "Cultural Contacts. Living in Europe". This content is accessible directly from mobile devices and is provided in German and in English. The app was created through a collaboration with the Institut für Museumsforschung (Institute for Museum Research) as part of the EU-funded project Europeana Space. The project also included museums from Lithuania and Estonia.

The application works through the use of image recognition: Users photograph an object and then receive additional information about it. Individual exhibition objects that are included in the app are marked with a coloured sticker on the floor. The app has three main frames of reference:

Personal perspectives

Museum staff introduce their favourite objects in the exhibition.

Gender Queer

In cooperation with museum-studies students from the Universität Würzburg, some objects are considered in light of gender norms.

Upcycling and other unique objects

This area includes objects in which old materials were 're-valued' by being granted a new use.

Visitors are invited to try out the app for themselves. All that is needed is a smartphone with Internet access and the app itself, which can be downloaded at: www.europeana-space.eu/blinkster. Before using the app, visitors should select the Museum Europäischer Kulturen in their app's settings.
