The conference “Myriad Materialities. Towards a New Global Writing of Colonial Ports and Port Cities” takes place online on 2, 8 and 9 July 2021. It is organised by the Colonial Ports and Global History (CPAGH) Network at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH) in partnership with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
The conference brings together scholars from history, social anthropology, musicology and museum studies who will discuss the materialities “beyond the seas” of colonial ports and port cities, with a view to re-/assessing colonial contact and its longer-term impact, and the concomitant circulation of goods and ideas across the centuries and continents.
In addition to the panels, the keynote speech by Kristin Mann, Professor Emerita at Emory University, and the presentation of a commissioned sound work by Linda O Keeffe on 8 and 9 July, CPAGH will host a “Virtual World Café” on 2 July. There will be three interactive breakout sessions, exploring the themes of materiality and commodities/consumption, materiality and place, and materiality and provenance.
