Museum Europäischer Kulturen
With selected objects and new online exhibitions, the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK) is presenting highlights from its collection and exhibition work.
The stories The MEK’s Top 10 Bizarre Objects and The Mechanical Weinachtsberg present highlights from the collection, including the famous animated Weinachtsberg from the Ore Mountains. daHEIM: glances into fugitive lives uses photos, texts and film material to document the exhibition of the same name, produced in collaboration with KUNSTASYL, which was on display in the MEK from 22 July 2016 to 2 July 2017.
There is also a newly produced high-resolution gigapixel reproduction of a four-part collaged folding screen from around 1900, allowing viewers to zoom right in, immersing themselves in the richness of its detail.
In total, the MEK’s presence on Google Arts & Culture comprises 172 objects. In a street-view tour, audiences can also discover the collection display Cultural Contacts: Life in Europe. Spread across 700 square metres, this permanent exhibition exhibits a cross-section of the diverse collections of the MEK, depicting the cultural contexts in which Europeans live, and addressing contemporary debates around social movements and forms of exclusion.
The Staatliche Museen zu Berlin has been participating in the Google Art Project since 2011 (since 2016 called Google Arts & Culture), beginning with the Alte Nationalgalerie and the Gemäldegalerie. In 2012, the Kupferstichkabinett (initially with 59 works), the Pergamonmuseum and the Altes Museum joined in. In 2017 MEK and the Kunstgewerbemuseum also came on board to mark the international Google Fashion Launch We Wear Culture, in which some 180 cultural institutions took part. The MEK participated with its exhibition CODE & CLOTHING.
