Philipp Demandt, who has headed the Alte Nationalgalerie since 2012, will on 1 October 2016 be taking over from Max Hollein as director of the Städel Museum and the Liebieghaus Sculpture Collection in Frankfurt.
Udo Kittelmann, director of the Nationalgalerie at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin said:
“It's always hard to say goodbye to good colleagues. However, I'm very happy for Philipp Demandt and delighted to learn of his appointment to Frankfurt. I would like to say a big thank you to him for the fantastic time spent working together at the Nationalgalerie."
In a statement, Michael Eissenhauer, director-general of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, announced:
“My heartfelt congratulations to Philipp Demandt on this new challenge. I am of course saddened by his departure, since it is in large part thanks to his active involvement that the Alte Nationalgalerie has in recent years been so well managed and opened to the public with such success. However, I also note with some pride the considerable role played by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin in creating museum directors now working at both a national and international level."
