Gemäldegalerie
Among the organisations with which the Gemäldegalerie has been collaborating for the exhibition “El Siglo de Oro: The Age of Velázquez", opening in Berlin on 1 July, is the Spanish “la Caixa" Banking Foundation. While the Foundation provides financial support for this project, the Gemäldegalerie is presenting works from its collection of Italian masters in the CaixaForum in Zaragoza. This is the first time the paintings have visited Spain, and they will be on show only in Zaragossa. Visitors to the CaixaForum can view the exhibition “Settecento. Obras Maestras de la Pintura Italiana de los Staatliche Museen zu Berlin" (Settecento: Masterpieces of Italian painting from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) from 3 June to 13 November 2016.
Some 45 works by 29 painters from all over Italy, including Francesco Guardi, Canaletto, Giuseppe Maria Crespi and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, give a comprehensive picture of the development and variety of Italian painting in the 18th century, 'the century of light'. This was a period of radical upheaval, in both society and art, which brought to an end the Baroque era. The exhibition traces this development through four areas of 18th century Italian painting: townscapes, the depiction of the human figure, modes of historical narrative and religious images.
