Longing for Rome – In the Footsteps of Maarten van Heemskerck: An ARTE Film Premiere on 28 April 2024

12.04.2024

The exhibition Facination Rome: Maarten van Heemskerck Draws the City, on view from 26 April 2024 at the Kulturforum, has prompted a documentary film about the Dutch artist. The premiere of the ARTE production, followed by a discussion, takes place at 12 noon on Sunday, 28 April 2024, at the Arsenal cinema. Registration is open.

Rome, the Eternal City: Since antiquity, its allure has transformed it into an open studio for artists from around the world. Dutch Renaissance artist Martin van Heemskerck travelled there in 1532 to study its ancient ruins, cityscapes, and sculptures. His drawings have shaped today’s visual memory of Rome during the Renaissance.

This is certainly reason enough to dedicate a special exhibition to Maarten van Heemskerck’s art. Facination Rome: Maarten van Heemskerck Draws the City is on display in the Berlin Kulturforum’s exhibition hall from 26 April to 4 August 2024, presented by the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, in collaboration with the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max-Planck-Institut für Kunstgeschichte..

The Film Sehnsucht nach Rom (Longing for Rome)

The art of drawing is also currently experiencing a renaissance. The film Sehnsucht nach Rom. Auf den Spuren von Maarten van Heemskerck, directed by Margarete Kreuzer (ARTE/ZDF 2024, 52 min.), narrates Maarten van Heemskerck’s journey to Rome.

The documentary draws an arc to the present, to the Urban Sketchers Marielle Durand and Kari Unbegabt, who almost 500 years later follow in the artist’s footsteps. Equipped with sketchpads, pencils and watercolours, they go in search of the Roman motifs that once inspired Maarten van Heemskerck. They are part of a community that arranges to meet somewhere to mutually sketch that location.

The film also follows the curators and restorer-conservationists involved in the Fascination Rome exhibition as they carry out research to reconstruct Maarten van Heemskerck’s five-year sojourn in the Eternal City.
