Kunstgewerbemuseum
The German-Polish fashion designer Dawid Tomaszewski has given an extensive collection of 53 sensational outfits to the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts) ‒ Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. A selection of these “signature pieces” is on view at the Berlin Kulturforum museum until late November 2023.
Tomaszewski’s gift to the Kunstgewerbemuseum comprises 53 complete ensembles seen at shows and on the catwalks over the last 14 years, as well as numerous accessories from collaborations, such as shoes, bags and hats. The selection of objects reflects the designer’s development over the past 15 years. It includes outfits from his beginnings as a fashion design student, early designs under his own label, and his most recent collections, which he presented as part of Berlin Fashion Week.
Until the end of November 2023, a selected presentation of five “signature pieces” by Dawid Tomaszewski can be seen at the entrance to the Kunstgewerbemuseum. A large monographic exhibition is now being planned for 2024.
The fashion designer, who lives and works in Berlin, founded his label in 2009 following professional stints with Sonia Rykiel in Paris and Comme des Garçons in Tokyo. A great variety of designs and materials characterise his creations. Alongside intricately embroidered dresses and pantsuits, extravagant draped evening gowns and unusual colour and material combinations can be found. German celebrities are especially fond of wearing his pieces at their red carpet appearances.
