As part of Berlin Fashion Week, the Kunstbibliothek (Art Library) is showing an immersive mixed reality presentation by Esther Perbandt, one of the most innovative contemporary fashion designers in Berlin. On the evening of 17 January 2023, a special presentation of the Kunstbibliothek – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin takes place in the lobby and exhibition hall at Berlin’s Kulturforum: Matthäikirchplatz 6, 10785 Berlin. Free admission.
While addressing an underlying question about how she plans to be working at a level of 100% sustainability in ten years, Esther Perbandt presents her elaborately produced clothing featuring integrated chips that digitally visualise the supply chain and origins of the materials. These fashions are realisations of digital designs that Perbandt premiered in July 2021 during a livestream of her Astro Noir digital fashion show. Perbandt is the first German fashion designer with a purely 3D collection, which has also been presented at a 3D fashion show.
Visitors to the POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair held in September 2021 used AR (Augmented Reality) to project designs from Perbandt’s collection onto their own bodies. These virtual designs have now become real, and their individual clothing histories can be digitally explored in the Astro Noir Lab at the Kulturforum.
The Kunstbibliothek preserves just such types of clothing histories in its Lipperheide Costume Library – Fashion Image Collection. Its holdings include photographs, drawings, prints, paintings and textual sources such as fashion magazines, with the oldest works dating from the late Middle Ages. The collection is continually being expanded to also include contempory designs.
Esther Perbandt is giving the Fashion Image Collection four prints of her Astro Noir designs connected to the presentation she co-organised with the Kunstbibliothek. Two of these works will be exhibited at the event, along with a selection of drawings and photographs from the image collection that historically contextualise Esther Perbandt’s work.
