Beginning on 29 June 2023, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Kolonnaden Bar on the Museumsinsel Berlin opens its doors to the public for five consequtive Thursday evenings at 7 pm. Moderated talks, DJ sets and cold drinks promise a pleasant summer evening at the Kolonnadenhof, located directly along the River Spree. The grand opening begins on 29 June 2023, at 5 pm, as part of the Kultursommerfestival Berlin (Cultural Summer Festival), with a dance performance by Flying Steps and other entertainment.

All of the Kolonnaden Bar Talks begin at 7 pm. Admission is free. The events take place rain or shine. The Kolonnaden (Colonnaded Courtyard) on the Museumsinsel Berlin is sheltered from the weather.

This year’s focus features topics including sports, dance and movement. Moderated by journalist Julia Vismann, art historians, archaeologists, film and theatre directors, sports photographers, quantum physicists, bicycle experts, and actors draw connections between art and other disciplines. DJs play their sets after the talks.

Overview of the Kolonnaden Bar Programme in 2023

The Kolonnaden Bar on the Museumsinsel Berlin

The concept of securing a place for stimulating discussions, relaxed gatherings and refreshing beverages has long been a Museumsinsel tradition. By the late 19th century, a drinking hall had opened under the colonnades along the Spree ‒ holding its own into the 1930s.

The Kolonnaden Bar is an outreach project of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin’s Education, Outreach, and Visitor Services Department. This summer event venue has been used since 2017 to invite the general public to participate in outdoor programmes establishing links between museum topics and current socially relevant issues at one of the most beautiful locations in the city.

The Kolonnaden Bar is part of the Kultursommerfestival Berlin and takes place in cooperation with Kulturprojekte Berlin.
