The Museum Europäischer Kulturen announces a new programme of events, and the Ethnologisches Museum and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst close their doors on 8 January 2017 – but maintain their presence with exhibitions in the city
The Ethnologisches Museum and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst, both part of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, will be closing their doors on the evening of 8 January for the last time at the Dahlem site before the non-European collections begin their relocation to what will become the Humboldt Forum. Until then, large parts of the museums’ collection displays and special exhibitions remain open to visitors while in other areas the work of dismantling and removing museum exhibits is already well under way.
The Museum Europäischer Kulturen will keep its location at the Dahlem site and introduce a new programmatic direction to include a wide range of events and exhibitions. Starting from 8 January, access to the museum will be via the entrance at Arnimallee 25 only.
Even during the relocation to the Humboldt Forum the non-European collections will maintain their presence in the city: the Museum für Asiatische Kunst will be presenting a select pick of its collections by stages from March 2017 within the permanent exhibition at the Kunstgewerbemuseum at the Kulturforum, and the large-scale special exhibition Faces of China: Chinese Portrait Painting in the Ming and Qing Dynasty (1368–1912) will be on show in the galleries for special exhibitions (Sonderausstellungshallen) at the Kulturforum from October 2017. From Autumn 2017, some 70 major works of African sculpture from the Ethnologisches Museum will be exhibited at the Bode-Museum on the Museumsinsel Berlin. As part of the exhibition Africa at the Bode Museum, these works will complete a powerful art-historical dialogue with the European pieces of the Skulpturensammlung and the Museum für Byzantinische Kunst.
