Prof. Heinrich Schulze Altcappenberg, director of the Kupferstichkabinett, has been awarded the Schinkel Prize by Neuruppin, a town synonymous with the German author Theodor Fontane. Also famous as Schinkel's birthplace, the town has chosen to honour Altcappenberg for his role in the research project Das Erbe Schinkels (Schinkel's Legacy) (2009-2012) which culminated in the exhibition 'Karl Friedrich Schinkel: History & Poetry', which first went on show at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin (September 2012 to January 2013) before travelling to the Hypo-Kunsthalle in Munich (February to May 2013).

The public award ceremony was held on the 235th anniversary of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's birth, on 13 March 2016, at the Schinkel monument and in the neighbouring Kulturkirche in Neuruppin.
