Haltung zeigen! (Take a Stance!): A Touring Exhibition by lab.Bode Visits Three Berlin Schoolyards

11.09.2020
Bode-Museum

At the start of the new school year, lab.Bode is going out into the city, in particular to the schoolyards of three partner schools. Take A Stance!, a touring exhibition for students and teachers, opened on 8 September 2020 at the schoolyard of the B. Traven-Gemeinschaftsschule (community school) in Berlin Spandau.

The exhibition focuses on three questions:

  • What does it mean to be courageous?
  • Which topics are important to us?
  • Are they important enough to move us to stand up for them and demonstrate?

Take a Stance! on Topics such as Environmental Protection, Racism, Bullying and Children’s Rights.

As part of Take a Stance!, curators of the Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst (Sculpture Collection and Museum of Byzantine Art) were invited to select works from the museum collections that distinctively speak about bravery and courage. In encounters with these historical artworks during one-week workshops over the past school year, students explored their own socially and politically concerns regarding topical subjects such as environmental protection, racism, mobbing, and children‘s rights. The project, which combines cultural and political education, resulted in posters, chants and performances with messages stemming from the children and teens.

An Exhibition Touring Around in a Tent

The output and results of the workshops and reproductions of the selected artworks are now on tour as a travelling exhibition in a tent, whose shape brings to mind the dome of the Bode-Museum. For a few days the schoolyards of the three partner schools become the venue for exhibitions and activities. The tent not only draws together the reproductions of the works from the Bode-Museum and the students’ concerns, it also creates a new space for discussion and artistic work. Morning workshops in the fields of painting, street art and performance take place with artists Surya Gied, Raphael Hillebrand, Magda Korsinsky and Daniel Mecklenburg. At midday students and teachers can view the touring exhibition and engage in discussions with curators from the Bode-Museum. In the afternoon experts invite children and teens to discuss the issues they have brought up. In addition, each school offers training for teachers on the topic of educational work aimed at countering discrimination.
