Museum Europäischer Kulturen
On the weekend of 14–15 June, audiences have one last chance to visit the exhibition I Never Said Goodbye | Women in Exile in the Museum Europäischer Kulturen (MEK). The programme for the garden party on Saturday will be put together by some of the women featured in the exhibition themselves.
For the show, the photographer Heike Steinweg shot portraits of women living in exile in Berlin who are united by their remarkable determination and courage to start a new life for themselves. The combination of life-size portraits with texts by the women themselves enables these migrant women to present themselves to audiences on their own terms: a perspective that is rarely present in contemporary media discourse.
To mark the end of the exhibition, the MEK is inviting audiences to a garden party, in full Syrian style. The musical and culinary programme will be put together by a number of the women featured in the exhibition. The programme features the singer Enana playing her original songs with her guitar and sombre voice, the Syrian women’s choir Haneen performing traditional Syrian folk songs accompanied by three musicians, and with her catering service Levante Gourmet, Malakeh Jazmati will provide the crowds with a lip-smacking Syrian and Oriental barbecue.
