Rathgen-Forschungslabor
Together with eight European institutions, the Rathgen-Forschungslabor (Rathgen Research Laboratory) has been working on an EU-funded research project (Plasma and Nano of New Age 'Soft Conservation', PANNA) since October 2011 with the aim of developing a plasma torch that can be used to gently clean surfaces, especially of artworks and cultural objects.
Plasma is produced by exciting a gas with a sufficient supply of energy, which transforms the gas molecules into reactive particles such as electrons and ions. Plasma is already used in many different fields and has great potential in the area of conservation, especially for the removal of corrosion products, adhesives, graffiti and rust.
To mark the end of the EU project, the Rathgen-Forschungslabor and its European partners will host a workshop on 2nd and 3rd September 2014, and a final conference on 4th September 2014 at the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg in Berlin. Both of these events will be held in English. Participation is free of charge, but please note that places are limited (workshop: 30 participants, conference: 100 participants).
