EMOP Berlin (European Month of Photography) is Germany's largest photography festival, presenting a full range of historic and contemporary photography. From 1 to 31 October, 120 museums, cultural institutions, galleries, project spaces, embassies and photography schools in Berlin and Potsdam will be presenting 130 exhibition projects and events. Classics are displayed alongside works that hold surprises even for connoisseurs, known names alongside emerging artists.

The EMOP Opening Days from 29 September to 2 October 2016 will be curated by C/O Berlin. As part of the opening events, the Museum für Fotografie and the Helmut Newton Stiftung will be hosting portfolio reviews. Photographers, artists and students were invited to apply and will now have the opportunity to present their photographic works in individual, one-on-one discussions with renowned experts. Book Days will also take place at the Museum für Fotografie and the Helmut Newton Stiftung, during which over 30 international publishers will present their latest publications. There will be special live presentations, books produced in real time, book signings, workshops, artist talks and performances all around the subject of the photography book.

During the Opening Days, admission to events and exhibitions at C/O Berlin, the Museum für Fotografie and the Helmut Newton Stiftung is free.

– Friday, 14 October 2016, 16:00–17:30 'Surveillance Studies' and Visual History
This panel discussion at the Museum für Fotografie in Berlin will investigate the history of surveillance and its images. How does visual history help to shed light on the surveillance practices of previous eras? How can the historical knowledge found within images be used effectively to better grasp the latest surveillance developments? The invitation is extended to anyone who is interested and has a direct or indirect involvement with visual history. With Dr Andreas Bienert, Dr Ulrike Boskamp, Dr Dietmar Kammerer and Dr Michalis Valaouris (moderation).

Everyone knows the scenario: at a flea market, you discover an old album full of enchanting photographs, but no written clues about the people, objects or situations depicted in them. In terms of conducting research, these images are worthless: there's no context and, in turn, no scientifically useable source. But is that really true? Aren't there ways of drawing information from photographs, even if there is no identifiable information about the source of the image at all?
This conference organised by the Kommission Fotografie der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Volkskunde in cooperation with the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin is dedicated to the analysis of individual photographs. The goal is to shine a light in the darkness of those images for which there are no available facts or data beyond the visual information.

Photography unites: three institutions, two sites, one collaboration
From 1 June 2016, C/O Berlin, the SMB's Kunstbibliothek and the Helmut Newton Stiftung will be broadening their collaborative and programming efforts. The three internationally renowned institutions for photography near Bahnhof Zoo are offering extended opening hours, discounted entry and joint curator tours on the first Thursday of every month. In Spring 2017, three thematically connected exhibitions with historical and contemporary artistic approaches will be presented for the first time.
