Donatello – Schöpfer der Renaissance: Premiere of the ARTE Film on 25 August 2022

03.08.2022
Kulturforum

The Summer Cinema at the Kulturforum premieres the Arte film ‘Donatello – Schöpfer der Renaissance’ on 25 August 2022.

Although Donatello had already achieved legendary status during his lifetime, he is known to few outside the art world today. Yet he is regarded as forefather of the High Renaissance and considered to have paved the way for such great artists as Raphael and Michelangelo. He anticipated art historical developments and set new standards for subsequent generations of artists. Donatello experimented with terracotta, bronze and stucco, breathing life into the materials through his skills as a sculptor. His bronze statue of David and his marble Pazzi Madonna are icons of art history.

Anatomy, Proportion and Perspective in Virtuoso Reliefs

Inspired by humanism and the revival of classical antiquity, Donatello carefully studied human anatomy and movement. With his knowledge of proportion and perspective, he revolutionised the visual perception of space in relief – an art historical milestone along the path to the Renaissance. However, Donatello’s artistic career would have been inconceivable had it not been for the support and commissions of banker, politician and art collector Cosimo de’ Medici.

The Film Donatello – Schopfer der Renaissance

The documentary (ARTE/ZDF, Germany, 2022, 52 min.) tells of Donatello’s relationship and friendship with his patron, architect Fillippo Brunelleschi, who pioneered the use of linear perspective as a way of creating the illusion of space on a two dimensional surface. The film also features the curators responsible for the international Donatello exhibition touring Florence, Berlin and London. “Donatello – Sculpting the Renaissance” is the first monographic exhibition in four decades dedicated to the artist. It can be viewed from 2 September 2022 to 8 January 2023 at the Gemäldegalerie (Old Master Paintings) – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Film Premiere and Discussion

The screening is preceded by a discussion, including an introduction to the film, with screenwriter and filmmaker Margarete Kreuzer and the exhibition’s curator, Neville Rowley.
