Discover Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s Works Online!

Kupferstichkabinett

With c. 5500 drawings, gouaches, watercolours and prints, the entire Schinkel Collection at the Kupferstichkabinett (Museum of Prints and Drawings) ‒ Staatliche Museen zu Berlin has recently been made available as an online catalogue: www.smb.museum/schinkel.

Even if we each trust “our version” of Schinkel ‒ the architect of Neoclassical Berlin, the designer of stage sets for Mozart’s Magic Flute, and the man who put the finishing touches on Potsdam’s palace landscape ‒ the online catalogue now offers possibilities to encounter the “complete” Schinkel, no holds barred. Search results can be stored in virtual portfolios; a zoom function allows magnifications; reference literature about a selected object can be called up by mouse click; and a comments section provides access to direct scholarly exchange.

Compilation of the online catalogue was made possible as part of the project Das Erbe Schinkels (Schinkel’s Legacy), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). It is considered a work in progress, and the catalogue will undergo further technical and editorial improvements in the coming months.

For anyone who first wants to enjoy Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s original works, there’s still time to see the exhibition, Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Geschichte und Poesie, at the Kulturforum until 6 January 2013.
